Cosmetic Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon: Is There Any Difference?

Aesthetic dermatology, cosmetic surgery and dermatology are three terms that are normally used interchangeably. It is true that most professionals belong to a branch of medical science called general dermatology, but the difference lies in their specialization. General dermatology is a four-year specialization course that doctors can study to become dermatologists. The dermatologist may seek additional sub-specialization in cosmetic dermatology or cosmetic surgery to focus more on the maintenance, restoration and improvement of the skin's appearance and physical characteristics of the human body.

To become the best dermatologist, you need a medical degree. Besides, a one-year internship in general surgery or other broad-based clinical training and three years of residency in dermatology are part of the requirements to become one. After meeting these requirements, you must pass the written and practical proficiency test for the certification. The exam is taken again every 10 years to maintain the validity of the certification.

Cosmetic surgery is a sub specialization of aesthetic dermatology that the dermatologist can follow. In most cases, cosmetic surgeons are dermatologists; however, cosmetic surgery is also a specialized plastic surgery program that doctors who have already completed their three-year general surgery residency can take. This is the reason why cosmetic surgeons are not necessarily dermatologists.
Although most general surgeons specializing in plastic surgery usually focus on restorative procedures (functional surgery), there are some who also practice cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgeons must pass the National Board Exam for plastic surgeons before they can request certification from their specific state.

Cosmetic dermatology, on the other hand, is an open sub specialization only for dermatologists. Cosmetic dermatologists are also called derma surgeons. They can undergo special training in laser rejuvenation, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, dermal fillers, chemical peels, tissue augmentation, facial liposuction and sclerotherapy.

The dermatologist can opt for different sub specializations such as dermatopathology, immunohematology, phototherapy, etc., but the most popular is aesthetic dermatology. Therefore, the titles of the cosmetic surgeon, cosmetic dermatologist and dermatologist are sometimes difficult to differentiate. A sure way to know what it is to verify your certifications.

Cosmetic surgery procedures, such as liposuction, blepharoplasty, implant and breast removal, etc. can be performed by an aesthetic dermatologist and plastic surgeon as long as they have the proper training and certification of the state board. The general dermatologist can perform some of the less invasive procedures in botox, filler and laser surgery.
